Citation 2010

TVAA Members, we are very excited to announce the CITATION 2010 award winners. The show is fantastic and the quality of work is wonderful!

Billy Hassell spent quality time visiting the exhibit in his judging process.
His juror’s statement captures his criteria in judging the awards, “When I critique or evaluate a work of art, as a teacher or as a juror, I look for originality of intent, strong composition, evidence of good craftsmanship and thoughtful presentation. I also rely on my intuition for there is always the possibility of an unconventional approach to a visual idea. Most importantly, the work of art in question
should be visually compelling.”

Membership Exhibition

63rd Membership Exhibition – May 1 to 15, 2010 at Medical City, Dallas Texas

Shari Hornish, Branch Managers (detail), Best of Show

The annual TVAA Membership Show is a non-juried member show held each spring at various locations. The member show allows each member to place one piece of their artwork on exhibit. The exhibit is usually three to four weeks long, and there is an awards reception.

The 2010 Membership Exhibition was shown at Medical City of Dallas. TVAA’s Exhibition Chair was JeanE Camp McIntosh, and her assistant was Co-Chair Yael Vangruber. Juror Ray-Mel Cornelius selected 12 award winners from the show this year. A beautiful catalogue was design and produced by David Blow, photography by Jane Damon, (look below for a link to the PDF version.)

Juror, Ray Mel Cornelius

Juror’s Statement

Wow. That was hard. But it was also a pleasure and
honor to have the opportunity to reward such beautiful
work… The Best of Show selection stood out in terms of every
criteria one could apply, drawing, color, design, mastery
of the media, really an outstanding painting.

A successful abstraction is much harder than most “civilians”
may think, and the Second Place winner made it
look easy. The fresh and sure brushwork reinforced the
underlying geometry while at the same time emancipating
the picture from it.

The Third Place selection presented a beautiful interpretation
of nature emphasizing careful and fluid design
in an unusual medium and presentation.

My thanks go to the TVAA and its members for the opportunity
to view and interact with such a great selection
of work. Please accept my respect and best wishes
to all the participants.
- Ray-Mel Cornelius, May 3, 2010
