2017 Still Life Exhibition (MARCH)

March 1 – 31, 2017
Reception Sunday, March 12, 2-4 pm

Although the French refer to still life as “nature morte” meaning “dead life,” the art form generally means a collection of still objects that had been alive, such as fruit, cut flowers or dead animals, thus “still life.” Over the centuries this genre has evolved to include most any collection of inanimate objects, whether or not portrayed realistically.  It is common for artists to learn still life drawing or painting early on in their studies. So whether it is an artwork from your past or a new project, bring out your still life paintings or drawings and celebrate this art form that has endured throughout history. All media welcome.

Frida Kahlo – Without Boundaries (Nov)

Frida Kahlo – Without Boundaries
November 1 – 30, 2016
Reception November 6, 2-4 pm

Frida Kahlo has been a popular cult figure and artist for a variety of reasons: As an artist, Kahlo overcame much physical suffering as a young woman, and later, while struggling to find her way as an artist in a male-dominated culture, both personally and artistically. Research into her life reveals her strong interest in politics, art, animals, her rejection of society’s values, and her magnetic bond to her husband Diego Rivera. For artists wishing to explore this fascinating and surprising artist, a wealth of information is on the Internet, and images of her paintings are also available to those interested in seeing her creations, which are extraordinarily personal and autobiographical. For this show we are requesting art about, influenced by, or in the style of Frida Kahlo. All media welcomed.

Words with a View (Apr)

Words with a View
April 4-29, 2016
Reception: April 23, 2 to 4 p.m.

It has been said that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” This phrase supposedly came into use in early advertising and newspaper coverage of events to increase impact and save space. For “Words With A View”, artists are invited to create art that is inspired by words that have significantly touched them emotionally. The “words” may be a few lines of a favorite poem, a passage of prose, lyrics from a song, or a quote by someone admired. The words need not be well-known.
